Just finishing Dakar is an accomplishment in itself. Winning in your class is massive feat. Here’s what happened with the UTV racers in the SxS class.
The UTV class is in its second year in Dakar and it is growing. Last year there were eight starters, five Polaris RZRs and three Yamaha YXZ1000Rs. This year there were 11 entries in the class that was called SSV/UTV in 2017, but is now simply called the Side by Side (SxS) class for 2018.
Here’s a video of what happened in Stage 12:
The champions of Dakar were crowned on January 20 in Córdoba, Argentina.
The team of Reinaldo Varela / Gustavo Gugelmin won the SxS class in their Can-Am. They were followed in by Patrice Garrouste and Steven Griener in a Polaris and then it was Claude Fournier with Szymon Gospodarczyk, also in a Polaris.

The adventure began back in 1977, when Thierry Sabine got lost on his motorbike in the Libyan desert during the Abidjan-Nice Rally. Saved from the sands in extremis, he returned to France still in thrall to this landscape and promising himself he would share his fascination with as many people as possible. The founder coined a motto for his inspiration: "A challenge for those who go. A dream for those who stay behind." Courtesy of his great conviction and that modicum of madness peculiar to all great ideas, the plan quickly became a reality. Since then, the Paris-Dakar, a unique event sparked by the spirit of adventure, open to all riders and carrying a message of friendship between all men, has never failed to challenge, surprise and excite.
