Here’s an overview of the different types of engines that Yamaha has designed and engineered for specific off-road applications.

Yamaha’s 686cc single overhead-cam four-valve fuel-injected engine is found in many of Yamaha ATVs and side x sides. This engine was optimized for mid-range power, quick revving responsiveness, along with low vibration for a quieter ride. The engine has a low center of mass, allowing for more compact chassis to aid in maneuverability. Yamaha uses its YCC-T drive-by-wire throttle in its off-road machines for smoother, more controllable throttle at any speed.
There’s also the 847c parallel-twin found in the Wolverine X2 and X4, for quieter trail riding.
Developed from its racing program, the inline three-cylinder engines that redline at 10,500 rpm are what powers the sporty YXZ1000R and YXZ1000R SS side x sides.
