Ultra4 is known for hosting some of the most challenging, most diverse race courses, and the 2018 Ultra4 Rock Krawler Showdown in Shamokin AOAA was one of them.
Mother Nature helped create interesting conditions for the event, with snow falling days before the race followed by a good dosing of rain. By race day, the sun was out and it was 70 degrees, but there was plenty of mud and water left on the course that had dense wooded sections, an uphill rock climb, tight downhill turns, high-speed fire roads, and creek crossings.
The 4900 UTV class went first early in the morning, followed by the Underclassmen (4600 Stock, 4500 Modified, 4800 Legends) after a lunch break. The afternoon had the 4400 Unlimited class. The Showdown in Shamokin was run simliar to the King Of The Hammers race, with elapsed time instead of a Grand Prix finish, so adjusted time would have an impact in the results.
Although the competitors raced for three hours, the top finishers were within seconds of each other. Team Nitto had an amazing day, with first place in the 4400, the 4800 and the 4500 Ultra4 race classes. Josh Blyler beat out Erik Miller by 15 seconds to take the overall win, and Erik Miller landed in second and Disco Derek West in third. In the 4800 Legends class, Casey Gilbert was in first, and the 4500 Modified class win went to Vaughn Gittin Jr.
