Mahindra Automotive North America is expanding its presence in the off-road industry and has opened a new North American HQ and manufacturing operation in Southeast Michigan. Mahindra also has a new UTV in the works.
Mahindra has a $230 million investment in Southeast Michigan that includes a warehouse and logistics operation in Pontiac and an existing prototype operation in Troy, for a total of approximately 400,000 square-feet of operations across three Detroit area facilities. Mahindra says that this is the first such new OEM facility in Southeast Michigan in more than 25 years and will bring hundreds of new jobs to the region.
“This is an exciting day for Mahindra, our terrific employees and Detroit. I couldn’t be prouder to be here to help open this new facility today,” said group chairman and managing director Anand Mahindra. “This building opening represents our company’s growing presence in North America and locally in the Metro Detroit area where we have tripled our workforce during the past 18 months. We are committed to growing the Mahindra brand in North America and Michigan.”
“This expansion represents a milestone for us and for Michigan,” said Rick Haas, president and COO of Mahindra North American Technical Center. “We started this operation with seven people four years ago – to be crossing the 250 mark is a testament to the hard work of our employees and what this region has to offer in terms of top automotive talent.”
Mahindra intends to produce off-road vehicles at the facility and a new UTV is in the works.
Below is a brief video, released on November 17, that gives us some clues of what’s coming up.

Building on their expertise in the steel industry, the Mahindra brothers began manufacturing Willys Jeeps in India in 1947. By 1969, the company started exporting utility vehicles and spare parts, then created a tractor division in 1982. In 2013, the Mahindra North American Technical Center (MNATC) was founded, and in 2017 MNATC significantly expanded its capabilities and renamed itself Mahindra Automotive North America (MANA).
Spanning 400,000 sq ft across Metro Detroit, Mahindra Automotive North America is now the first automotive OEM to set up manufacturing in Southeast Michigan in more than twenty-five years. An elite design and engineering facility newly outfitted for large-scale automotive manufacturing and assembly, MANA employs over 300 automotive professionals, all with the common goal of putting Mahindra vehicles to work on (and off) North American roads.
